Frequently Asked Questions

What is UW Gamers

The UW Gamers of the University of Waterloo is an organization formed to promote interest in video games as an emerging industry and as a form of entertainment.

What does UW Gamers do?

UW Gamers is willing to do anything within our power to promote video game interests. Currently we plan to hold console tornaments on the University of Waterloo campus. If members just want to get together and play non-competitively, we can help too. We are working towards LAN parties, and hold discussions about video games, game design, the game industry, and other game related topics. Our future plans include bringing in guest speakers to talk about games, bigger and better tournaments, ways to help fellow gamers in Waterloo find each other, and our own Katamari ball.

How do I join UW Gamers?

Membership is open to all undergraduates at University of Waterloo.

Our general meetings, as well as our events will be open to public.

Is there a fee?

Nope! However, we do accept donations! That aside, we do most of our fundraising through tournament entry fees.

What is UW Gamers’ stance on piracy?

UW Gamers does NOT encourage the use of pirated (illegally copied) material. Members are expected to be aware that pirated materials are illegal and the club frowns on such behaviour. However, there are exceptions that the club will overlook (examples include abandonware and importation of foreign games through legal means).

What do I get for joining?

There is no distinction between members and non-members of our club, as we are very open. Anyone is welcome to come out and participate in our events, any anyone can help plan. If you’d like to keep up to date about what is going on in our club, you can check out our forums, join our mailing list, visit the front page once in a while, or subscribe to the RSS feed for the front page posts.

If you’d like to become a more involved member of our club, or if you would like to eventually become a club executive, come out to our meetings. We hold a club meeting at the beginning of every term to decide the club executives for the term. If you’d just like to help out at our events, see the section right below this one.

What can I do to help UW Gamers?

Short answer: Let us borrow anything you have, and give us ideas.

Long answer: We’re looking for:
* People to lend us their consoles, controllers, and games for our events
* Individuals who would like to take up a club executive position
* Ideas and suggestions on events (anything from what games to play to insight on how to get a successful LAN party setup)

If you have suggestions but can’t make it to our meetings, post them on our forums or drop us an email at uwgamers@gmail.com
