LAN Event – Wed July 27th

We’re holding a LAN event on Wednesday July 27th, from 11am until midnight (or so). It’s the day after classes end, so those of you in school shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Exams start a week after. The event will be in RCH 307, the usual room if you’ve come to one of our LAN events in the past.

For those of you on a work term, it’ll still be running at 5/6pm or whenever you stop working so you could still drop by for a few hours and play some games.

We will be ordering pizza twice during the day, and there will be pop/energy drinks/other beverages available the whole time. Pizza usually winds up at around $1.25 per slice, and drinks around $0.50.

Common games include Team Fortress 2, Starcraft 2, and League of Legends. But we’re always looking for new things to play, so bring whatever your heart desires.

Especially if your heart desires to bring an ethernet cable. While the club will have a few spare cables, and connecting wirelessly is an option, it’s best for everyone if you bring your own cable.

If you need help getting your rig to/from the event, or want more information, check out the planning topic on our forums.

It’s the last event of the term. So come on out next Wednesday for a day-long, end-of-term gaming extravaganza.

Game On! Wednesday July 13th, 5pm, SLC Great Hall

We have a Game On event next week, Wednesday July 13th in the SLC Great Hall at 5pm. This event is our least formal type of event, we just bring some consoles out and play a bunch of multiplayer games.

If you’re looking for an assignment break or just want to hang around for a bit and maybe talk to some of the long time members about things, come on by. If there’s anything in particular you’re looking to play (or want to bring), check out the planning thread on our forums and post a bit!

The event will probably end around 10pm, but it depends how everything is going. It could be slightly earlier or later. It should be fun.

As an additional reminder, we have a LAN event on July 27th. It’s the day after classes end (and there’s a very long pre-exam study period), so hopefully most of you can come out to that. More information to come later.

UW Competitive Gaming Study looking for participants

As there are many gamers (and gaming interest) on campus, from time to time grad students do studies that involve gaming. Daniel Rasmussen is in a Human Computer Interaction (HCI) course and is looking for help regarding competitive gaming in particular.

If you have experience in competitive gaming and would be interested in sharing your experiences with Daniel, you can find full information below.

Hi,

As part of my CS 889 course in HCI, I’m doing a project on social cultures in different online video games. The findings from the project will allow us to better understand the differences between game communities, as well as what might motivate those differences.

I need students to participate in my study.Participation will take approximately 60 minutes of your time, and will be scheduled for a time that is mutually convenient. In particular I am looking for participants who have played Starcraft/Starcraft 2 or DotA/LoL/HoN, but if you are interested in participating and have any experience with online competitive games then I would be interested to hear from you.

In the study, you will be asked to observe and comment on recorded game play, as well as answer some interview questions. If you’re interested in participating, please email me (drasmuss@uwaterloo.ca) so we can set up a mutually convenient time.

Thanks for your help,

Daniel Rasmussen
